The Pulsar Telos XP50 is what you buy when image quality matters more than price. A European-made Lynred 640x480 sensor, a fast F50/1.0 germanium objective, and a sub-18 mK NETD rating combine into one of the cleanest thermal images available in a handheld device — and because the Telos is built to be upgraded rather than replaced, it does not become obsolete the year after you buy it.

The Sensor And Lens Are The Whole Story

The 640x480 Lynred microbolometer runs a 17µm pixel pitch with a sensor NETD under 18 mK and a system-level figure under 15 mK. NETD measures the smallest temperature difference the sensor can actually resolve, and lower is better. That number is what decides whether a thermal optic still works when fog settles into a drainage, when a rain shower has left every surface holding the same temperature, or in the flat low-contrast light of first and last legal shooting hours. Cheaper sensors show you that something is warm. This one shows you enough shape to know what it is.

Feeding that sensor is an F50/1.0 germanium objective. The fast aperture pulls in more long-wave infrared energy than a slower lens, which is why the Telos reaches out as far as it does — a deer-sized target is detectable to roughly 1,900 yards in full darkness. Treat that as detection, not identification; identification distance is always considerably shorter and depends on conditions as much as optics.

Modular By Design

The Telos is the first Pulsar monocular built around upgradeable components rather than a sealed one-time purchase. Sensor and electronics modules can be serviced and updated as the platform develops, so the body you buy now can carry newer internals later. The Telos family spans XQ, XG, XP, and XL sensor tiers with and without an integrated laser rangefinder, and the XP50 sits at the resolution-and-sensitivity sweet spot for hunting use.

Controls Built Like A Camera

Pulsar laid the buttons out in a symmetrical row along the top panel, so the unit handles identically in either hand — a small detail that matters when you are holding a monocular one-handed for an hour of glassing. Focus and magnification live on knurled rings rather than buttons, which means you adjust by feel without looking away from the eyepiece. Base magnification is 2.5x with smooth digital zoom to 10x, extending to 20x with Zoom Boost engaged. The 1024x768 AMOLED display has the contrast to make the sensor's detail visible instead of muddying it.

Field Practicalities

Power comes from the LPS 7i 6400 mAh lithium-ion pack, good for about 8.5 hours, and it charges over USB-C or wirelessly. IPX7 sealing handles rain and immersion, and the unit operates from -13°F to 104°F, which covers a Colorado November without complaint. At 25.3 ounces it is a substantial optic — noticeably heavier than a pocket-class monocular, and that weight is the honest trade for the 50mm objective. Onboard photo and video recording plus Stream Vision 2 connectivity let you save and share what you found.

Worth Knowing Before You Buy

This is the most expensive handheld thermal we stock, and the weight is real — if you want 640-class resolution in something you forget is in your pocket, the Nocpix Lumi H35 does it at under 12 ounces for meaningfully less money. If you want this same sensor with ranging built in, look at the Telos LRF XP50 instead, which adds a 1,000-yard laser rangefinder.

Thermal detects heat, not detail. It will not let you judge antlers or age an animal — use it to find and confirm, then switch to glass. Check your state's regulations before taking any thermal device afield, since rules on thermal use for hunting vary considerably by state and by species.
