Same sensor as the 15-384, different lens, different job. The Taipan V2 19-384 puts a 19mm germanium objective in front of AGM's sub-20 mK 384 detector, trading some field of view for a 950-meter detection range. If you glass open country rather than thick timber, this is the Taipan to buy.
The Lens Is The Whole Decision
Both Taipan V2 384 models run identical sensors. What separates them is the objective, and that choice should follow your terrain rather than your budget.
The 19mm lens produces a 13.7° x 10.3° field of view with 2x base magnification and digital zoom to 16x. That is a narrower window than the 15mm version, which means initial scanning takes a little longer — you are sweeping a smaller slice of hillside per pass. In exchange, detection range climbs to 950 meters, roughly 1,040 yards, against a deer-sized target.
For sagebrush parks, burn scars, cut banks, and anywhere you are trying to pick a heat signature off a far slope, that extra reach is worth more than the width you gave up. For dense timber where everything happens inside 200 yards, it is not.
Sensor And Sensitivity
The 384x288 VOx uncooled detector runs a 12µm pixel pitch at 50Hz, rated under 20 mK NETD. Resolution determines how much shape a heat signature carries — whether you can read a body outline and a neck, or only see that something is warm. NETD determines whether you still get that shape when fog settles in, when humidity climbs, or in the hour after rain when everything in the scene has equalized. Sub-20 mK at this price is the reason the Taipan V2 line is worth attention.
Built For Long Sits
The removable 18650 battery runs over 6.5 hours and costs a few dollars to duplicate — carry two spares and you have covered a full night. AGM's 90-degree tilt sensor kills the display when the unit is pointed down or stowed and wakes it when you lift it, which quietly extends every charge.
The 1024x768 OLED sits behind a wide rubber eyepiece built for extended glassing. Worth Knowing Before You Buy
The narrower field of view is a real trade — if most of your glassing happens in tight country, the 15-384 will serve you better and costs less. Four palettes and 16GB of storage are functional rather than generous.
A 384 sensor detects well but identifies at shorter range than a 640. If you need to know what you are looking at well past 300 yards, the AGM ReachIR LRF 35-640 or the Nocpix Lumi H35 are the step up.
Thermal detects heat, not detail. It will not let you judge antlers or age an animal — use it to find and confirm, then switch to glass. Check your state's regulations before taking any thermal device afield, since rules on thermal use for hunting vary considerably by state and by species.
